Media Release: Members of the Horizon 2020-funded Science Diplomacy Projects form European Union Science Diplomacy Alliance
[Online] June 10, 2021 — Following the success of the three research and innovation projects on science diplomacy funded under the Horizon 2020 programme, 16 participating institutions have launched the European Union Science Diplomacy Alliance. The Alliance is a collaborative initiative to sustain and grow the activities, networks, impact and legacy of the three projects: EL-CSID – European Leadership in Cultural, Science and Innovation Diplomacy, S4D4C – Using Science for/in Diplomacy for Addressing Global Challenges, and InsSciDE – Inventing a Shared Science Diplomacy for Europe. The members of the Alliance will support research, training and networking to advance science, technology and innovation diplomacy in Europe and beyond to address global challenges.
The Alliance was first announced at the closing of the S4D4C Final Networking Meeting in March 2021 and today is formally starting its activities. The founding members include European universities and research centers, foundations, diplomatic academies and multilateral organisations (see list of members in Annex I). The Alliance will facilitate interactions and dialogue, training, institutional capacity building and coordination of joint funding to enhance their collective impact. The Alliance is open to members who are legal entities based in Europe and who self-commit to mobilize resources and support each other in the achievement of shared objectives. Non-EU based legal entities can affiliate as “Global Networking Partners”. A board of “Advisory Partners” will be created by invitation only to include representatives of international institutions. "After more than three years of working together under the framework of the Horizon 2020 research projects, the European Union Science Diplomacy Alliance is the ideal instrument to ensure the sustainability of our results," said Elke Dall, coordinator of the S4D4C project and outgoing Chair, who led the process of designing the architecture of the Alliance.
“Science diplomacy is a versatile tool that advances dialogue and cooperation between countries, regions and citizens. With the in-depth knowledge, experience and dedication of the European Union Science Diplomacy Alliance members, we are certain that our activities and events will contribute to enhancing and advancing the awareness for and knowledge of science diplomacy. As Chair of the Alliance from July-December 2021, we are looking forward to a fruitful cooperation with its members, partners and stakeholders, to jointly anchor the Alliance and promote Science Diplomacy as a key tool for addressing global challenges,” said incoming Chair Angela Schindler-Daniels, Head of the Brussels Liaison Office at the German Aerospace Center.
