S4D4C’s State-of-the-Art Report on Science Diplomacy

Considering the large number of differing and sometimes contradictory perceptions of Science Diplomacy, from an analytical point of view, it still remains an open question what exactly the term denotes, how it is defined and conceptualised. The state-of-the-art report condenses and discusses these general definitions and discusses how the term is demarcated from other practices. It provides a summary of different concepts of science diplomacy as specified in the literature and a concluding discussion on the state of science diplomacy as an analytical concept. In doing so, it distinguishes between science diplomacy as a discourse and existing activities and structures that could be potentially considered as science diplomacy but do not need to be. The article hence provides an overview over the heuristic debate, national and international science diplomacy approaches and practices and discusses the drivers and promoters of science diplomacy. The report concludes with a collection of different recommendations that can be drawn from the literature and might help you in determining your own path as science diplomat.
