IIASA is exploring a new initiative to support international decision-making and cooperation on global policy challenges that require deep understanding of complex natural and social systems. The proposed Howard Raiffa Center for Science Diplomacy will leverage IIASA’s scientific reputation and interdisciplinary expertise, international networks, and neutral, non-governmental status, as well as its history as an institute founded to foster cooperation in an era of heightened geopolitical tensions. The Center’s aim will be to help bridge the gaps between parties engaged in collaborative policy development, scientists conducting relevant research, and stakeholders in the policy decisions. The Center will build on the legacy of IIASA’s first Director, Howard Raiffa, in decision sciences and negotiation analysis.

This multidisciplinary panel will include scholars and practitioners of systems science, diplomacy, and negotiation analysis to discuss the gaps in the new and evolving field of science diplomacy and consider the role that IIASA can uniquely play in the development, negotiation and adoption of evidence-based international policies. The event is designed to catalyze broader discussion within IIASA and its global network on how the Raiffa Center can enhance the impact of the Institute’s work in support of solutions to global problems.
